The Hero's Journey

King · Warrior · Magician · Lover

An ancient template for transformation, mapped onto four archetypal energies drawn from the tradition of masculine psychology. The goal is not to learn about these archetypes. It is to recognize them in yourself.

The Monomyth

Joseph Campbell & the Hero's Journey

Joseph Campbell spent a lifetime studying the myths, legends, and sacred stories of cultures across every era and continent. What he found was a single recurring pattern, a story that humanity keeps telling itself. He called it the monomyth, or the Hero's Journey.

The hero, or heroine, begins in the ordinary world, receives a call to adventure, crosses a threshold into the unknown, and descends into the abyss, where they must face their shadow self. If they survive, they return transformed, bearing a boon for their community.

Campbell wrote: "The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." The journey is not a metaphor for something else. It is the map of what it means to grow up, at any age. It belongs to everyone.

In this course, that universal map is applied through a specific lens: the four archetypal energies of masculine psychology identified by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette, King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover. Each is a station on the journey, a dimension of the self waiting to be integrated.

Robert Moore & the Four Archetypes

About This Course

Joseph Campbell identified the monomyth, the single story that every culture on earth keeps telling. The Hero's Journey belongs to everyone: hero and heroine alike. This course applies that map through a specific lens, the masculine archetypes that Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette identified in their landmark work on men's psychology.

The KWML framework maps four core masculine energies, each with a mature, integrated form and an immature shadow. The work is to identify which energies are running you, name their stories, and begin to choose.

This is a course in masculine psychology. The energies are human. The lens is male, and that's where its precision comes from.
