The Magician is the wise man, the sage, the knower of secrets. He sees and navigates the inner worlds. He understands the dynamics and energy flows of the outer. He is a master of technology, engineering, mathematics, mysticism, and logic. He reads the stars, navigates the soul, and writes the laws.
In the legends, he is the King's close advisor, the one who stops the regent from making catastrophic errors of judgment, who counsels when to advance and when to hold, who translates the hidden language of circumstance into wisdom. He is the shaman who communicates with the ancestors and stars. He governs the observing ego and is the meditator who reveals the universe's truth.
The Magician in his fullness is always in service to a higher power. His knowledge is not owned, it is held in trust, to be offered with care and passed on to those who are ready. This is what separates the true Magician from his shadow: the willingness to initiate others into the circle of knowing, rather than guard the door.
A true Magician, what Mary Ovenstone calls a "capital M Magician", employs all three realms of mind: the conscious (logic and reason), the subconscious (intuition), and the super-conscious (spiritual awareness and perception). The small-m magician uses one or the other. The full Magician integrates both knowledge and inner knowing.
Shadow · The Manipulator (Active)
The Manipulator works in covert ways to undermine others. He withholds crucial information and deliberately sets others up to appear inferior. The specialist knowledge he possesses becomes a rush, and he is not prepared to share it unless the price is right. He charges seekers enormous sums to promise secrets, then delivers only enough to keep them dependent. The internet has created an army of Shadow Manipulators.
Shadow · The Innocent One (Passive)
The Innocent One wants all the glory of the Magician without the responsibility. He gets excited about a new practice or path, invests just enough to signal membership, then abandons it before depth is required. Because he can never achieve his goals through his own effort, he becomes a stumbling block to those who do, out of envy, he diminishes others' success and sabotages those who are actually doing the work.
Shadow Self-Talk
"I am stupid." · "I am incompetent."
When Magician energy is in shadow, these are the voices that block access to genuine knowing. The person who believes they are stupid cannot trust their own perception, and so they either hoard what little they feel they have, or discount it entirely.

Expressions of the Magician
The Magician appears across many domains, wherever specialized knowledge of how energy flows in a system is held and applied. He may be the scientist, the electronics technician, the psychotherapist, the healer, the doctor, the shaman, the priest or priestess, the seer or prophet, the lawyer. He is the keeper of ceremony, the synthesizer across realms.
The god that corresponds to the Magician is Hermes, god of alchemy and messenger between worlds. The goddess is Sophia, goddess of wisdom, the one who knows from the inside.
How to Access the Magician
Carve out sacred space. The Magician cannot operate in the noise of ordinary life. If you want access to the insights, energies, and ideas that exist above the day-to-day, you need an entryway. Sacred space, ritual, meditation, intentional solitude, is that gateway.
In the life of the modern man, there is no line between the sacred and the profane. Drawing that line, and holding it, is the first act of the Magician's discipline. Maybe it's listening to music in your study after the house goes quiet. Maybe it's a secluded place in the park where you go to think. Whatever it is, draw a line around it and make it sacred.
Combine knowledge with intuition. Study your domain deeply, and also listen to what arises beneath the rational mind. The full Magician does not choose between the two. He integrates them.
